About the Britannia Silver Coin

The Britannia Silver Coin is an official English silver bullion coin produced by the Royal Mint since 1997. Like the Britannia gold coins, the British Silver Britannia coin comes in seven different sizes: 5 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz & 1/40 oz. In 2013, the fineness of the Britannia Silver coin was increased from .958 to .999 silver, making it eligible for holding in a Precious Metals IRA. A new coin is released each year with slight variations from the original.

Similar to the popular American Silver Eagle and Silver Maple Leaf coins, some of the recent Britannia Silver Coins produced by the Royal Mint have an advanced anti-counterfeit design to help investors more accurately identify fake coins for safer transactions.

Britannia Silver Coin Design

Obverse Side

2022 britannia silver coin obverse

The obverse side features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in intricate detail. Although all Britannia Silver Coins include a picture of Her Majesty, there have been five iterations since the coins were first minted. Only small changes are made to the image primarily to keep up with the changing appearance of the Queen as opposed to an artistic change. Jody Clark, Britain's youngest engraver of an official coin, is the designer of the current portrait being minted on the latest versions of the Britannia Silver Coin.

Reverse Side

2022 britannia silver coin reverse

Britannia, the mythical embodiment of the UK for which the coin received its name, is emblazoned on the reverse side. This regal image has undergone several renderings over the years. The original design featured a standing Britannia with a trident and shield. Every other year, the Royal Mint graces the reverse side of the coin with a new design. Some alternative versions see the mythical figure seated, wearing a Corinthian helmet, positioned next to a lion, or in front of a flag. Traditionally, the formidable image is intended to symbolize the strength and power of Great Britain.

Britannia Silver proof coins are higher-quality versions of the standard Britannia Silver coins that generally fetch higher prices for collectors and investors. Unlike their bullion counterparts, the Britannia Silver proof coins have a mirror finish on both the obverse and reverse sides. This gives the coins a more elegant and stylish appearance.

Every year, the obverse side of the Silver Britannia proof coins feature Queen Elizabeth II with slight variations over the years as the official portrait of Her Majesty was updated to stay closer to the monarch’s appearance. The Britannia figure is emblazoned on the reverse side of Silver Britannia proof coins with a new iteration each year. Often, new designers are hired by the Royal Mint to come up with a fresh design while maintaining the central theme of the mythical figure of Great Britain.

Investors or collectors who are looking to acquire more than one Silver Britannia proof coin can purchase an entire set that features six different sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz & 1/40 oz. The proof sets come with the official certificate of authenticity along with the original mint box for protection and display purposes. During select years, the Royal Mint also produces limited edition proofs and premium versions.

Britannia Silver Coin Value

Since its initial release in 1997, the Britannia Silver Coin has become one of the most highly sought-after coins produced by the Royal Mint. The pure silver content makes it a popular choice among silver coin investors and stackers, while the yearly variations of the Britannia Silver Coins attract collectors. Generally speaking, the Britannia Silver Coin would sell for a small percentage below the spot price of silver. In 2013 and 2014, the Royal Mint produced four limited edition presentations of the Britannia Silver Coin: a 1-oz and 5-oz version for each year. The low mintage of these versions adds collectible value on top of their bullion worth.

These mint-to-order coins all have the standard .999 silver rating and feature the standard portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side. The 2013 version is minted with a reverse design of Britannia wearing a Corinthian helmet with an owl to represent wisdom. The reverse side of the 2014 Silver Britannia coin is graced with a majestic lion and the mythical representation of the UK both in front of a globe.
